Executive Direction

As we publish this edition of the Cultural Observer, most of the West has placed South Africa in the travel red list owing to the Omicron variant of Covid-19 identified by the South African scientists. Placing us in the red list has huge economic implications for the country and economic sectors that would have benefited from inward and outward travel. Our sector is similarly negatively affected. This happens at the time when our focus was and should squarely be on economic recovery.

The SA Cultural Observatory -  Measuring And Valuing SA’s Cultural And Creative Industries

The Observatory was established to undertake economic research for and about the cultural and creative industries in SA. Additionally we have done research on other related sectors that impact the cultural industries.

SACO Releases Covid-19 Impact Report in Soweto

Due to the Covid-19 restrictions most industry events and activities have either been cancelled or largely held online since April 2020. The South African Cultural Observatory has similarly been affected by these restrictions and has for the past two years taken to releasing reports and conducting our workshops online.

Cape Town-Based Artist Andrea Du Plessis Scoops The 2021 Sasol New Signatures Art Competition

The Cape Town-based artist, Andrea du Plessis (40) has been announced as the winner of the 2021 Sasol New Signatures Art Competition. Du Plessis won the coveted title for her mixed media work Paloceae Lupantozoa.

Theatre on the Bay
Tuesday, 14 December 2021 to Saturday, 15 January 22


Renowned South African funnyman and award winning actor Alan Committee is will host a year-end comedy treat with an hilarious line-up of comedians. From the 10th of December to the 15th of January Theatre on the Bay in Camps Bay will host its first ever comedy line-up extravaganza. Every night will be hosted by Alan Committee and include a young rising comedy act, an established Cape Town comedian and then a full stand up set from a starring headliner. Four acts in one night! The 90 minute show will showcase a variety of comic voices, perspectives and all big laughs. The headliners over the run include renowned South African Xhosa speaking Jewish comic Nik Rabinowitz, physical comedian Rob van Vuuren and the hilarious Schalk Bezuidenhout. Other comics include Dalin Oliver, Mel Jones, Gilli Apter, Yaseen Barnes.
